			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I could not find a thread to post my thoughts on cat-09 (Mind it small case &#8211; &#8216;cat&#8217;).</p>
<p>This is might be amusing for some how much those three alphabets of the English (I I M) language mean to a person person like me, might seem crazy.But what do you do when you lose faith in the system the role models betray you.<br />
It seems ironical how the mecca of Management fails in doing some logical thinking and screws up a paper which creates India Inc Heroes.Goof ups like these might be little snags for the conducting authority but has any one thought about the cost.</p>
<p>cat 09 irrespective of the result has raised doubts in my mind what do IIMs actually create when they do not know what they are going to take as input.<br />
There are some issues which have shattered the faith in these institutions.</p>
<p>First: NDA : I am not saying that the cause is not right. What we need to ask will it actually work? Though it did ensure that none of the site pasted the questions openly. But details like repeat of previous year paper were already news headline.One question the balance of knowledge of people between writing paper in first slot and last slot.http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/CAT-questions-lifted-from-coaching-guides-say-experts/articleshow/5298141.cms</p>
<p>Second:The technical snags in the paper. There is actually no excuse for the technical snags and most importantly no scope for &#8216;on the job learning&#8217; for the staff in the test center. So can be assume the authorities could not do enough good enough a LOAD testing. Weird !!</p>
<p>Third : Difficulty level of the paper.<br />
There is one doubt which comes to the mind what was the criteria on which people were judged.Cannot question the criteria as we agree to it. But unable to figure out the skill needed to crack CAT. Speed, stress handling or the &#8216;wow factor&#8217;.Or just speed of solving problems.</p>
<p>Fourth:Varying level of difficulty across sets.<br />
This is a tricky one. Now how do you judge people when they are not tested on the same skills.Some might argue that GMAT also has varying level of difficulty across different attempts.But there is a major difference GMAT scores range is what is needed not a cut off score as such.</p>
<p>These are some of the questions popping in my head.</p>

What do you do when heroes fail?<br />
You sit and wonder was it the failure of the hero or your failure making him The Hero.</p>
<p>On a lighter note cat-09 has lived up to its expectations of giving surprises.</p>

<p>There are similar rules for the remaining primes under 40, i.e. 11,13, 17,19,23,29,31,37,41,43 and 47.</p>
<p>Test for divisibility by 11. Subtract the last digit from the remaining leading truncated number. If the result is divisible by 11, then so was the first number. Apply this rule over and over again as necessary.<br />
Example: 19151&#8211;&gt; 1915-1 =1914 &#8211;&gt;191-4=187 &#8211;&gt;18-7=11, so yes, 19151 is divisible by 11.</p>
<p>Test for divisibility by 13. Add four times the last digit to the remaining leading truncated number. If the result is divisible by 13, then so was the first number. Apply this rule over and over again as necessary.<br />
Example: 50661&#8211;&gt;5066+4=5070&#8211;&gt;507+0=507&#8211;&gt;50+28=78 and 78 is 6*13, so 50661 is divisible by 13.</p>
<p>Test for divisibility by 17. Subtract five times the last digit from the remaining leading truncated number. If the result is divisible by 17, then so was the first number. Apply this rule over and over again as necessary.<br />
Example: 3978&#8211;&gt;397-5*8=357&#8211;&gt;35-5*7=0. So 3978 is divisible by 17.</p>
<p>Test for divisibility by 19. Add two times the last digit to the remaining leading truncated number. If the result is divisible by 19, then so was the first number. Apply this rule over and over again as necessary.<br />
EG: 101156&#8211;&gt;10115+2*6=10127&#8211;&gt;1012+2*7=1026&#8211;&gt;102+2*6=114 and 114=6*19, so 101156 is divisible by 19.</p>
<p>My original divisibilty webpage stopped here. However, I have had a number of mails asking for divisibility tests for larger primes, so I&#8217;ve extended the list up to 50. Actually even with 37 most people cannot do the necessary mental arithmetic easily, because they cannot recognise even single-digit multiples of two-digit numbers on sight. People are no longer taught the multiplication table up to 20*20 as I was as a child. Nowadays we are lucky if they know it up to 10*10.</p>
<p>Test for divisibility by 23. 3*23=69, ends in a 9, so ADD. Add 7 times the last digit to the remaining leading truncated number. If the result is divisible by 23, then so was the first number. Apply this rule over and over again as necessary.<br />
Example: 17043&#8211;&gt;1704+7*3=1725&#8211;&gt;172+7*5=207 which is 9*23, so 17043 is also divisible by 23.</p>
<p>Test for divisibility by 29. Add three times the last digit to the remaining leading truncated number. If the result is divisible by 29, then so was the first number. Apply this rule over and over again as necessary.<br />
Example: 15689&#8211;&gt;1568+3*9=1595&#8211;&gt;159+3*5=174&#8211;&gt;17+3*4=29, so 15689 is also divisible by 29.</p>
<p>Test for divisibility by 31. Subtract three times the last digit from the remaining leading truncated number. If the result is divisible by 31, then so was the first number. Apply this rule over and over again as necessary.<br />
Example: 7998&#8211;&gt;799-3*8=775&#8211;&gt;77-3*5=62 which is twice 31, so 7998 is also divisible by 31.</p>
<p>Test for divisibility by 37. This is (slightly) more difficult, since it perforce uses a double-digit multiplier, namely eleven. People can usually do single digit multiples of 11, so we can use the same technique still. Subtract eleven times the last digit from the remaining leading truncated number. If the result is divisible by 37, then so was the first number. Apply this rule over and over again as necessary.<br />
Example: 23384&#8211;&gt;2338-11*4=2294&#8211;&gt;229-11*4=185 which is five times 37, so 23384 is also divisible by 37.</p>
<p>Test for divisibility by 41. Subtract four times the last digit from the remaining leading truncated number. If the result is divisible by 41, then so was the first number. Apply this rule over and over again as necessary.<br />
Example: 30873&#8211;&gt;3087-4*3=3075&#8211;&gt;307-4*5=287&#8211;&gt;28-4*7=0, remainder is zero and so 30873 is also divisible by 41.</p>
<p>Test for divisibility by 43. Now it starts to get really difficult for most people, because the multiplier to be used is 13, and most people cannot recognise even single digit multiples of 13 at sight. You may want to make a little list of 13*N first. Nevertheless, for the sake of completeness, we will use the same method. Add thirteen times the last digit to the remaining leading truncated number. If the result is divisible by 43, then so was the first number. Apply this rule over and over again as necessary.<br />
Example: 3182&#8211;&gt;318+13*2=344&#8211;&gt;34+13*4=86 which is recognisably twice 43, and so 3182 is also divisible by 43.<br />
Update : Bill Malloy has pointed out that, since we are working to modulo43, instead of adding factor 13 times the last digit, we can subtract 30 times it, because 13+30=43. Why didn&#8217;t I think of that!!! <img src='http://s0.wp.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif' alt=':-(' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p>Finally, the Test for divisibility by 47. This too is difficult for most people, because the multiplier to be used is 14, and most people cannot recognise even single digit multiples of 14 at sight. You may want to make a little list of 14*N first. Nevertheless, for the sake of completeness, we will use the same method. Subtract fourteen times the last digit from the remaining leading truncated number. If the result is divisible by 47, then so was the first number. Apply this rule over and over again as necessary.<br />
Example: 34827&#8211;&gt;3482-14*7=3384&#8211;&gt;338-14*4=282&#8211;&gt;28-14*2=0 , remainder is zero and so 34827 is divisible by 47.</p>

<p>In a College, 70% of people support Chennai Super Kings, 75% support Deccan Chargers and 80% support Mumbai Indians. What is the minimum percentage of people who support all three teams?  </p>
<p><strong>Solution:</strong></p>
<p>Percentage of people who support CS + percentage of people who support DC + percentage of people who support MI&#8217;s = </p>
<p>70% + 75% + 80% = 225% </p>
<p>i.e. 100(support any one 1 team)+100(support 2nd team also)+25(support 3rd team as well)</p>
<p>It means that if we distribute the supporters evenly we get at-least 25  people who support all three.<br />
<strong>Ans</strong> 25</p>
<p><strong>Problem 2</strong><br />
In a stock company , where every broker follows at least one of the three sock sectors &#8211; Finance, Agriculture, or FMCG:<br />
65% follow Finance,<br />
86% follow Agriculture,, and<br />
57% follow  FMCG.</p>
<p>What can be the maximum and minimum percentage of brokers who follow<br />
	1·          all three stocks<br />
        2·          exactly two stocks  </p>
<p>Calculate surplus :<br />
Finance + Agriculture + FMCG = 65+86+57 = 208%<br />
Surplus = 208 – 100 = 108% </p>
<p>Now, surplus can be accommodated in 2 ways : </p>
<ol>
<li>Maximum in 2 only and minimum in all 3</li>
<li>Maximum in All 3 and minimum in 2 only</li>
</ol>
<ol>
<li>Maximum in 2 only and minimum in all 3</li>
</ol>
<p>100% can be accommodated in 2 only<br />
8% will have to be accommodated in all 3.<br />
Maximum percentage who follow 2 events = 100</p>
<p>Minimum percentage who follow all 3 = 8<br />
Max. percentage who follow exactly 2 = 100 – 8 = 92%</p>
<ol>
<li>Maximum in All 3 and minimum in 2 only</li>
</ol>
<p>As 1 in All 3 area causes increase of surplus as 2.<br />
If we put 54% in all 3 -&gt; surplus = 54 x  2 = 108. </p>
<p>Max. who follow all 3 = 54%<br />
Min. no. who follow exactly 2 = 0%</p>
<p><strong>Question 3</strong><br />
In case question 2 would be slightly changed as that a broker be allowed to follow none of the stocks.<br />
Then the case<br />
<strong>	Maximum in 2 only and minimum in all 3 </strong>	would remain the same. However the second option <strong>Maximum in All 3 and minimum in 2 only</strong> would give us different answer.</p>
<p><strong>Solution</strong><br />
Since a broken can follow any of the three stocks and can also follow neither of these three.<br />
Hence the Maximum number in all three will be<strong> 57.</strong><br />
Next we need to count the remaining options left i.e.<br />
208 &#8211; 57*3 = 37<br />
Now out of the remaining brokers 100-57 left 43 we can accommodate 37. with 6 still spare.</p>
<p>Hence we can conclude that<br />
<strong>Answer</strong><br />
            57 follow all Three.<br />
            0 follow only 2 Stocks.</p>

Count the number of digits your number has that are on the left side of the decimal point. If the number of digits is odd, then add a &#8220;0&#8243; to the front of your number. Obviously that doesn&#8217;t change your number&#8217;s value, but it&#8217;s important because now you need to break the number into groups of two digits, and it&#8217;s important that you break your number up on the proper boundries.<br />
Look at the first group of two digits as its own number. Find the largest number whose square is equal to or less than that. This is the first digit of the exact square root.<br />
Square the first digit of the square root and subtract the result from the first group of two digits.<br />
Now append the next group of two digits to the result of step 3 to obtain the partial dividend.<br />
Now multiply what you have of the square root so far by 2, and discard any decimal points. This is the partial divisor.<br />
Divide the partial divisor into the partial dividend and take the first digit of the result. This is the next digit of the square root.<br />
Since we worked with the first digit after the decimal in our original number (the 6 in 28.6) to figure out the new digit, we put a decimal in front of the new digit. So far, our square root is:<br />
Take the new digit from step 6 and append it to the partial divisor from step five.<br />
Multiply the result by the new digit.<br />
Subtract that from the old partial dividend.<br />
Append the next group of two digits (00) to the result of step 9 to get a new partial dividend.<br />
At this point the algorithm starts repeating steps:<br />
Repeat step 5: Multiply what you have of the square root by two and discard decimal points, to get a new partial divisor.<br />
Repeat step 6: Divide the partial divisor into the partial divided and take the first digit of the result.<br />
Tack the new digit onto the end of the square root, to get:<br />
For more digits of accuracy, just repeat steps 7 through 10, and then loop back to step 5 as many times as you want. Add more groups of &#8220;00&#8243; as necessary.</p>
<p>Example:<br />
28.6, breaks up into &#8220;28&#8243; &#8220;60&#8243; &#8220;00&#8243;. However, 9.1 breaks up as &#8220;09&#8243; &#8220;10&#8243; &#8220;00&#8243;.<br />
The first group is 28, which gives us 5 since 52 = 25, which is less than 28.<br />
28 &#8211; 25 = 3<br />
&#8220;3&#8243; + &#8220;60&#8243; yields &#8220;360&#8243;<br />
5 x 2 = 10<br />
360/10 = 36, which yields &#8220;3&#8243;<br />

<p>Product of two 2-digit numbers.</p>
<p><strong>If the numbers are not too far apart, and their difference is even, </strong></p>
<p>one might use the well known formula (a+n)(a-n)=a2-n2. a here is the average of the two numbers. For example, 28?24=262-22=676-4=672 since 26=(24+28)/2. Also, 19?31=252-62=625-36=589 since 25=(19+31)/2.</p>
<p><strong>If the numbers are not too far apart, and </strong><strong>If the difference is odd</strong></p>
<p>use either n(m+1)=nm+n or n(m-1)=nm-n. Example 37?34=37?35-37=362-12-37=1296-1-37=1258. On the other hand, 37?34=37?33+37=352-22+37=1225-4+37=1258.</p>
<p><strong>Product of numbers that only differ in units.</strong><br />
If the numbers only differ in units and the sum of the units is 10, like with 53 and 57 or 122 and 128, then think of them as, say 10a+b and 10a+c, where b+c=10. The product (10a+b)(10a+c) is given by 100a2+10a(b+c)+bc =&amp;nbs;100a(a+1)+bc. Thus to compute 53 times 57 (a=5, b=3, c=7), multiply 5 times (5+1) to get 30. Append to the result (30) theproduct of the units (3?7=21) to obtain 3021. Similarly 122?128 = 12?13?100+2?8=15616.</p>

<p>Suppose you get a question and have to select an answer with multiple choices to choose from, you can find out the right answer logically using the game theory using the Game Theory. Without even knowing the question.</p>
<p>And the reason I am posting this here, is that I have used a similar method myself a lot of times when I didn’t have the time, or didn’t know how to get the right answer. But I never knew it was related to the Game theory.</p>
<p>Example:</p>
<p>Which of the following is the correct answer?</p>
<p>a) 4π sq. inches</p>
<p>b) 8π sq. inches</p>
<p>c) 16 sq. inches</p>
<p>d) 16π sq. inches</p>
<p>e) 32π sq. inches</p>
<p>Answer:</p>
<p>The odd answer in the series is c. Since it is so different from the other answers, it is probably not right. The fact that the units are in square inches suggests an answer that has a perfect square in it, such as 4π or 16π.<br />
This is a fine start and demonstrates good test-taking skills, but we haven’t really started to use game theory. Think of the game being played by the person writing the question. What is that person’s objective?</p>
<p>He or she wants people who understand the problem to get the answer right and those who don’t to get it wrong. Thus wrong answers have to be chosen carefully so as to be appealing to folks who don’t quite know the answer. For example, in response to the question: “How many feet are in a mile?” an answer of “Giraffe,” or even 16π, is unlikely to attract any takers.</p>
<p>Turning this around, imagine that 16 square inches really is the right answer. What kind of question might have 16 square inches as the answer but would lead someone to think 32π is right? Not many. People don’t often go around adding π to answers for the fun of it. “Did you see my new car — it gets 10π miles to the gallon.” We think not. Hence we can truly rule out 16 as being the correct solution.</p>
<p>Let’s now turn to the two perfect squares, 4π and 16π. Assume for a moment that 16π square inches is the correct solution. The problem might have been: “What is the area of a circle with a radius of 4?” The correct formula for the area of a circle is πr2. However, the person who didn’t quite remember the formula might have mixed it up with the formula for the circumference of a circle, 2πr. (Yes, we know that the circumference is in inches, not square inches, but the person making this mistake would be unlikely to recognize this issue.)</p>
<p>Note that if r = 4, then 2πr is 8π, and that would lead the person to the wrong answer of b. The person could also mix and match and use the formula 2πr2, and hence believe that 32π or e was the right answer. The person could leave off the π and come up with 16 or c, or the person could forget to square the radius and simply use πr as the area, leading to 4π or a. In summary, if 16π is the correct answer, then we can tell a plausible story about how each of the other answers might be chosen. They are all good wrong answers for the test maker.</p>
<p>What if 4π is the correct solution (so that r = 2)? Think now about the most common mistake: mixing up circumference with area. If the student used the wrong formula, 2πr, he or she would still get 4π, albeit with incorrect units. There is nothing worse, from a test maker’s perspective, than allowing the person to get the right answer for the wrong reason. Hence 4π would be a terrible right answer, as it would allow too many people who didn’t know what they were doing to get full credit.</p>
<p>At this point, we are done. We are confident that the right answer is 16π. And we are right. By thinking about the objective of the person writing the test, we can suss out the right answer, often without even seeing the question.</p>
<p>Now, we don’t recommend that you go about taking the GMAT and other tests without bothering to even look at the questions. We appreciate that if you are smart enough to go through this logic, you most likely know the formula for the area of a circle. But you never know. There will be cases where you don’t know the meaning of one of the answers or the material for the question wasn’t covered in your course. In those cases, thinking about the testing game may lead you to the right answer.</p>

Once there was a little island country. The land of this country was the tiny island itself. The total money in circulation was 2 dollars as there were only two pieces of 1 dollar coins circulating around.<br />
1) There were 3 citizens living on this island country. A owned the land. B and C each owned 1 dollar.<br />
2) B decided to purchase the land from A for 1 dollar. So, now A and C own 1 dollar each while B owned a piece of land that is worth 1 dollar.<br />
- The net asset of the country now = 3 dollars.<br />
3) Now C thought that since there is only one piece of land in the country, and land is non producible asset, its value must definitely go up. So, he borrowed 1 dollar from A, and together with his own 1 dollar, he bought the land from B for 2 dollars.<br />
- A has a loan to C of 1 dollar, so his net asset is 1 dollar.<br />
- B sold his land and got 2 dollars, so his net asset is 2 dollars.<br />
- C owned the piece of land worth 2 dollars but with his 1 dollar debt to A, his net residual asset is 1 dollar.<br />
- Thus, the net asset of the country = 4 dollars.<br />
4) A saw that the land he once owned has risen in value. He regretted having sold it. Luckily, he has a 1 dollar loan to C. He then borrowed 2 dollars from B and acquired the land back from C for 3 dollars. The payment is by 2 dollars cash (which he borrowed) and cancellation of the 1 dollar loan to C. As a result, A now owned a piece of land that is worth 3 dollars. But since he owed B 2 dollars, his net asset is 1 dollar.<br />
- B loaned 2 dollars to A. So his net asset is 2 dollars.<br />
- C now has the 2 coins. His net asset is also 2 dollars.<br />
- The net asset of the country = 5 dollars. A bubble is building up.<br />
(5) B saw that the value of land kept rising. He also wanted to own the land. So he bought the land from A for 4 dollars. The payment is by borrowing 2 dollars from C, and cancellation of his 2 dollars loan to A.<br />
- As a result, A has got his debt cleared and he got the 2 coins. His net asset is 2 dollars.<br />
- B owned a piece of land that is worth 4 dollars, but since he has a debt of 2 dollars with C, his net Asset is 2 dollars.<br />
- C loaned 2 dollars to B, so his net asset is 2 dollars.<br />
- The net asset of the country = 6 dollars; even though, the country has only one piece of land and 2 Dollars in circulation.<br />
(6) Everybody has made money and everybody felt happy and prosperous.<br />
(7) One day an evil wind blew, and an evil thought came to C’s mind. “Hey, what if the land price stop going up, how could B repay my loan. There is only 2 dollars in circulation, and, I think after all the land that B owns is worth at most only 1 dollar, and no more.”<br />
(8) A also thought the same way.<br />
(9) Nobody wanted to buy land anymore.<br />
- So, in the end, A owns the 2 dollar coins, his net asset is 2 dollars.<br />
- B owed C 2 dollars and the land he owned which he thought worth 4 dollars is now 1 dollar. So his net asset is only 1 dollar.<br />
- C has a loan of 2 dollars to B. But it is a bad debt. Although his net asset is still 2 dollars, his heart is palpitating.<br />
- The net asset of the country = 3 dollars again.<br />
(10) So, who has stolen the 3 dollars from the country? Of course, before the bubble burst B thought his land was worth 4 dollars. Actually, right before the collapse, the net asset of the country was 6 dollars on paper. B’s net asset is still 2 dollars, his heart is palpitating.<br />
(11) B had no choice but to declare bankruptcy. C as to relinquish his 2 dollars bad debt to B, but in return he acquired the land which is worth 1 dollar now.<br />
- A owns the 2 coins; his net asset is 2 dollars.<br />
- B is bankrupt; his net asset is 0 dollar. (He lost everything)<br />
- C got no choice but end up with a land worth only 1 dollar<br />
- The net asset of the country is again = 3 dollars.<br />
The story ends now, but —<br />
There has been a redistribution of wealth.<br />
A is the winner, B is the loser, C is lucky that he is spared.<br />
A few points worth noting -<br />
(1) When a bubble is building up, the debt of individuals to one another in a country is also building up.<br />
(2) This story of the island is a closed system whereby there is no other country and hence no foreign debt. The worth of the asset can only be calculated using the island’s own currency. Hence, there is no net loss.<br />
(3) An over-damped system is assumed when the bubble burst, meaning the land’s value did not go down to below 1 dollar.<br />
(4) When the bubble burst, the fellow with cash is the winner. The fellows having the land or extending loan to others are the losers. The asset could shrink or in worst case, they go bankrupt.<br />
(5) If there is another citizen D either holding a dollar or another piece of land but refrains from taking part in the game, he will neither win nor lose. But he will see the value of his money or land goes up and down like a see saw.<br />
(6) When the bubble was in the growing phase, everybody made money.<br />
(7) If you are smart and know that you are living in a growing bubble, it is worthwhile to borrow money (like A) and take part in the game. But you must know when you should change everything back to cash.<br />
(8) As in the case of land, the above phenomenon applies to stocks as well.<br />
(9) The actual worth of land or stocks depends largely on psychology (or speculation).</p>
